Recently, an all-superconducting user magnet, jointly developed by the Institute of Electrical Engineering and the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, successfully achieved a central magnetic field strength of 35.6 tesla (T) — the highest record in this field globally to date. This milestone marks that China has reached internationally advanced levels in high-temperature superconducting applications and will provide crucial technical support for research in materials science, life sciences, nuclear fusion, and beyond.

This all-superconducting user magnet, featuring a high-temperature superconducting insert magnet as its core, has a bore diameter of 35 mm. In 2023, it achieved a field strength of 30 T and was opened to domestic and international users. Following continuous upgrades by the research team in materials, structure, and fabrication processes, the system recently attained a peak field of 35.6 T while maintaining the same 35 mm bore diameter. This makes the system the world's only all-superconducting user magnet capable of providing magnetic fields above 30 T for global materials science research, significantly enhancing China's research capabilities in high-field magnetic materials science.

The all-superconducting user magnet is currently housed within the Synergetic Extreme Condition User Facility (SECUF), a large-scale scientific facility located in the Huairou Science City in Beijing. The SECUF passed national acceptance in February 2025. It is a comprehensive research facility integrating extreme conditions including ultra-low temperatures, high magnetic fields, ultra-high pressures, and ultra-fast optical fields. The 35.6 T all-superconducting user magnet will work in conjunction with other extreme-condition research instruments within the facility, providing powerful technical support for scientists exploring the microscopic material world.
