17th European Conference on Applied Superconductivity (EUCAS 2025)

Recently, the 17th European Conference on Applied Superconductivity (EUCAS 2025) was held in Portugal. During the opening ceremony, the IEEE Council on Superconductivity presented the "Award for Continuing and Significant Contributions in the Field of Applied Superconductivity - Large Scale" to researcher Xiao Liye from the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in recognition of his pioneering contributions to the field of large-scale superconducting applications. This is the first time a Chinese scientist has received this award.

Xiao Liye has long been dedicated to research on superconducting power system technology. Leading his team, he has successfully developed a series of landmark superconducting equipment, including: a 10kV superconducting substation demonstration facility, a 360-meter/10kA high-temperature superconducting DC cable, a 40kV/2kA DC fault current limiter, a 1MJ/500kA superconducting magnetic energy storage/fault current limiter (SMES/FCL) system suitable for wind farms, and a 100kV/1kA superconducting device integrated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) energy pipelines. These achievements hold broad application prospects in fields such as power transmission, renewable energy grid integration, and energy infrastructure, offering a "Chinese solution" for the large-scale global application of superconducting technology.

This award, presented by the IEEE Council on Superconductivity, is a highly prestigious international accolade in the field of applied superconductivity. It represents full recognition of scientists' or engineers' research achievements in the domain of large-scale applied superconductivity.
